A plastic extrusion mold is a key tool in the plastic extrusion process, which is used to shape molten plastic into specific profiles. Here is a detailed introduction:

Structure

  • Die Head: It is the core part of the mold. The internal structure of the die head is designed according to the shape of the plastic product to be extruded. It has channels that enable the molten plastic to flow evenly and form the initial shape of the product. For example, in the extrusion of plastic pipes, the die head has a circular channel to form the tubular shape of the pipe.

  • Calibration Sleeve: Located behind the die head, it is used to further calibrate and shape the extruded plastic product. It helps to ensure the dimensional accuracy and surface quality of the product. The calibration sleeve is usually cooled to solidify the plastic quickly.

Working Principle

  • The plastic extrusion mold works in conjunction with an extruder. First, the plastic raw materials are heated and melted in the extruder to form a viscous fluid. Then, the molten plastic is forced into the die head of the extrusion mold under high pressure. Inside the die head, the plastic flows through the designed channels and takes on the initial shape of the product. After exiting the die head, the plastic enters the calibration sleeve, where it is cooled and further shaped to meet the final product requirements.

Types

  • Profile Extrusion Molds: Used to produce various plastic profiles, such as window frames, door frames, and decorative strips. These molds can produce products with complex cross - sectional shapes.

  • Pipe Extrusion Molds: Specialized in manufacturing plastic pipes of different diameters and wall thicknesses, which are widely used in the fields of water supply, drainage, and gas transportation.

  • Sheet and Film Extrusion Molds: Used to produce plastic sheets and films, which are commonly used in packaging, construction, and agricultural applications.

Material Selection

  • The materials used for plastic extrusion molds are required to have high strength, wear resistance, and heat resistance. Common mold materials include alloy steel, tool steel, and stainless steel. These materials can withstand the high - pressure and high - temperature conditions during the extrusion process and ensure the service life and dimensional accuracy of the mold.

Manufacturing Process

  • The manufacturing of plastic extrusion molds requires high - precision machining processes, including milling, turning, drilling, and electro - discharge machining (EDM). These processes are used to accurately shape the mold cavity and ensure the dimensional accuracy and surface quality of the mold. After machining, the mold is usually subjected to heat treatment and surface treatment to improve its hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance.
